Sermon on the Blog: Is Jesus buried under an apartment building?

Heresy, you cry?

Heresy (Oxford English Dictionary)- is a "theological or religious opinion or doctrine maintained in opposition, or held to be contrary, to the Catholic or Orthodox doctrine of the Christian Church, or, by extension, to that of any church, creed, or religious system, considered as orthodox. By extension, heresy is an opinion or doctrine in philosophy, politics, science, art, etc., at variance with those generally accepted as authoritative." The study of heresy is heresiology.

The Da Vinci Code has millions of people wondering these days. Wondering about divinity, "churchianity," and truths hidden in secret codes.

After a dear friend (devout Catholic, by the way) commented that he wanted to learn more about his church's history, I recommended a series of lectures by Laurence Gardner, beginning with Bloodline of the Holy Grail.

The time-honoured quest for the Holy Grail has been referred to by some as the 'ultimate quest', but in 1547 the Church condemned Grail lore as a heresy even though tradition perceives the Grail as a thoroughly Christian relic.

A heresy is described as 'an opinion which is contrary to the orthodox dogma of the Christian bishops'. The word 'heresy' is nothing more than a derogatory label - a tag used by a fearful establishment that has long sought to maintain control of society through fear of the unknown. It can therefore define those aspects of philosophy and research which quest into the realms of the unknown and which, from time to time, provide answers and solutions that are quite contrary to authorized doctrine.

As the years progress, however, it is evident that scientific and medical discovery must overturn much of the medieval religious dogma that has persisted to modern times. And, in this regard, some previously cited heresies are already being taken on board by a Church that has little option to do otherwise. So, let us begin with the most obvious of all questions: What is the Holy Grail?

The word 'Gra-al' originates from ancient Mesopotamia, where it was recorded as being the 'nectar of supreme excellence'. It was directly related to the bloodline of kings who descended from the gods - those monarchs who were anointed with the fat of the sacred Mûs-hûs: a type of monitor-crocodile in the Euphrates Valley. By virtue of this anointing, the kings were also called Mûs-hûs (or, in Egypt, Messeh) - a term which in the later Hebrew tongue became Messiah, meaning Anointed One.

By medieval times in Europe, this line of kingly descent was defined by the French word Sangréal, meaning Blood Royal. This was the Blood Royal of Judah - the line of King David which progressed to the family of Jesus. By the Middle Ages, the definition Sangréal became San Graal. When written more fully it was Saint Graal - the word 'saint', of course, relating to 'holy'. Then, by a natural linguistic process, came the more romantically familiar English term, Holy Grail.

In symbolic terms the Grail is often portrayed as a chalice that contains the blood of Jesus. Alternatively it is portrayed as a vine of grapes. The product of grapes is wine, and it is the chalice and the wine of Grail tradition that sit at the very heart of the Eucharist (the Holy Communion). In this sacrament, the sacred chalice contains the wine that represents the perpetual blood of Jesus.

It is quite apparent that, although maintaining the ancient Communion custom, the Christian Church has conveniently ignored and elected not to teach the true meaning and origin of the custom. Few people even think to enquire about the ultimate symbolism of the chalice and wine sacrament, believing that it comes simply from some Gospel entries relating to the Last Supper. But what is the significance of the perpetual blood of Jesus? How is the blood of Jesus (or of anyone else for that matter) perpetuated? It is perpetuated through family and lineage. So why was it that the Church authorities elected to ignore the bloodline significance of the Grail sacrament?

The fact is that every Government and every Church teaches the form of history or dogma most conducive to its own vested interest. In this regard we are all conditioned to receiving a very selective form of teaching. We are taught what we are supposed to know, and we are told what we're supposed to believe. But, for the most part, we learn both political and religious history by way of national or clerical propaganda. This often becomes absolute dogma - teachings which may not be challenged for fear of reprisals. With regard to the Church's attitude towards the chalice and the wine, it is apparent that the original symbolism had to be reinterpreted by the bishops because it denoted that Jesus had offspring.

Read the rest, along with Gardner's other lectures, including Genesis of The Grail Kings, and start asking questions. As for Jesus being buried under an apartment building, check out Caskets and the Family Tomb of Jesus.

Anything is possible when we're talking about man's willingness to dupe his fellow man.

Thus Endeth Today's Sermon.

Go forth today and research the history of that in which you believe.

I don't care what you believe in. I don't even care what you don't believe in. That's your business.

But you have a right to know whether or not someone has corrupted the history of your faith.

I mean it, damn it!

The New York Times Launches Political Bog With Front Page "Story" On The Clinton Marriage

What's the paper of record to do when its readership numbers tank and those pesky bloggers start getting more hits than the NYTimes?

Start your own political blog, of course. Sorry, I can't stop laughing about major revenue-based media conglomerates jumping on the blog bandwagon.

It's like the British army publishing its own late 18th century pamphlets and distributing them to King George's colonists.

Anyway, that whole frontpage above-the-fold NYT article about the Clinton marriage was nothing but an elaborate advertising blitz, designed to draw gossip lovers away from The Post's Page Six and straight to the NYT's new "news"-based blog.

Ahem.

May 22 8:00 am
Welcome to The Empire Zone
Categories: General

Let's cut to the chase: There are so many politics blogs out there, do you really need to read another one?

We vote Yes.

The New York Times political team from Albany and City Hall to Washington and the mother ship on 43rd Street is taking election-year coverage of New York politics to another level with the start of the Empire Zone, a news-driven blog covering '06 in all its glory: Hillary and Bill Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, George Pataki, Mike Bloomberg, Spitzer vs. Suozzi, Faso vs. Weld, and an array of other compelling candidates for statewide office.

We'll pull back the curtain on politics and political news coverage and explain how it all works. And perhaps we'’ll demystify our role in the process, which can only be to the good, considering the skepticism with which the public sees politics and the media.

Whether you're a New Yorker or a reader far away, we hope you'll savor the news and analysis in the Zone every day, and use the Comments section to help drive the political conversation.

Patrick Healy

Hiding behind the "blog" definition and enticing readers with juicy bits of sex/no sex gossip, the NYT thinks it's no longer necessary to cite any reputable sources at all or even address the rumor content on its "blog" site. Savor the analysis, indeed.

Alas, NYT. You haven't been the same since the WaPo creamed you with its Watergate scoops and Pulitzers.

How about a blog on the downhill slide of a once great newspaper?

Didn't think so. That would take research and reputable source citation. Besides, it's way more fun to smear the Clintons.

By the way, which office is Bill Clinton running for in '06?

And when will you conduct your on-the-street survey on the Bush marriage?

That's just gossip, you say?

The Political Code (Explained)

I once worked on the Democratic campaign of a reformed Republican, who lamented that Dems didn't understand "the code." What code? Where? Huh?

One example of the code: Republicans fight like junkyard dogs during their primaries but embrace the general election candidate with a collective zeal.

Another example: When a Republican sounds like a Dem, s/he's lying, and most Republican voters know it.

Remember Newt Gingrich's "Contract On For America? Republicans all embraced the proposed "moral" duty to do right by citizens through "moral" Republican governing.

We all know how that's turned out.

So, when I read this morning that Democrats have no plans to impeach the president if they win enough house and senate seats this fall, I immediately thought of "the code."

Dems across the country are weeping and wailing that Dems have already caved and have no plans to hold BushCo accountable... through impeachment.

To those who haven't considered the most important perk that accompanies control of the house and/or the senate, I have two code words for you:

"Subpoena power."

And while we're on the subject of "the code," consider this morning's hyped Bush/Blair news conference scheduled for tonight. According to news reports, BLushCo will propose an "Iraq transition" phase, in which the US and GB will begin drawing down troops significantly if all goes well.

The most quoted "code" timeframe this morning: 18 months.

It's May, 2006. In 18 months, it will be November, 2008.

The code.

Get it?

Got it?

Good.

In Memoriam

Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr.

Bentsen, Lloyd Millard, Jr., 1921-2006, American political leader and U.S. secretary of the Treasury (1993-–94), b. Mission, Tex. He received a law degree from the Univ. of Texas in 1942 and served as a B-24 squadron commander during World War II. A Democrat, he served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1949-57) before starting a successful insurance business.

Returning to politics in 1970, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating George H. W. Bush, and served from 1971-93. From 1987 to 1993 he was chairman of the Senate finance committee.

In the 1988 presidential election, the Democratic ticket of Michael Dukakis and Bentsen was defeated by George H. W. Bush and Dan Quayle. As secretary of the treasury under President Bill Clinton, Bentsen helped shepherd the 1993 deficit-reduction bill through Congress as well as the North American Free Trade Agreement and the accord establishing the World Trade Organization.

Lloyd Bentsen will forever be remembered for cementing this look onto Dan Quayle's face:

QUAYLE: I have far more experience than many others that sought the office of vice president of this country. I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency. I will be prepared to deal with the people in the Bush administration, if that unfortunate event would ever occur.

WOODRUFF: Senator Bentsen.

BENTSEN: Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.

QUAYLE: That was really uncalled for, Senator.
Lloyd Bentsen has died. Who can fill his shoes?

George W. Bush's Final Solution?

To make concentration camps acceptable to the populace, Jews in Germany were branded as criminals, Asians in Australia were branded as criminals, and immigrants in the US are now being branded as criminals...

Halliburton is building the camps. On American soil.

Have we learned nothing from history?
In the next few weeks, the US government will open concentration camps. These will house, initially, undocumented immigrants - including entire families - possibly indefinitely. Michael Chertoff claims that these will be "humane" camps, but that "we're not going to let people get away with this."

60 years after the last civilian concentration camps in the U.S. closed, 60 years after U.S. troops liberated Nazi death camps, the U.S. government has embarked on a massive expansion of the use of concentration camps, of various kinds, to deal with anyone it considers to be unpalatable. How did we get here? How have recent concentration camps worked around the world? And what might be the future of this policy - and this country - if we do not vehemently demand an end to such horrific tactics?

About 2 million families face the risk of being split up because the children are U.S.-born citizens but the parents are illegal immigrants. At least one lawmaker has proposed ending citizenship by birthright, restricting automatic citizenship at birth to children of U.S. citizens and legal residents.

Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star

Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream

On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America

Home, don't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm

Home, to a new and a shiny place
Make our bed, and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm

Everywhere around the world
They're coming to America
Every time that flag's unfurled
They're coming to America

Got a dream to take them there
They're coming to America
Got a dream they've come to share
They're coming to America

They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
Today, today, today, today, today

My country 'tis of thee
(Today)
Sweet land of liberty
(today)
Of thee I sing
(today)
Of thee I sing
(today)

Alas, America.

Dear Paula,

These nuts (and I don't mean the kind you use for baking) have been gunning for you since you cooked for Jimmy Carter.

SOME OF HAVE HIGHER MORAL STANDARDS. WHAT YOU DO INYOUR PRIVATE LIFE SHOULD STAY PRIVATE. PAULA SHAME ON YOU. I WATCH THE BREAKFAST IN BED SHOW ON MAY 20.

Paula, Honey, I've been to your restaurant in Savannah, where I bought your Body By The Lady & Sons T-Shirt and witnessed first-hand the thousands of fans waiting all day to taste your food.

Whatever you do, Paula, DON'T APOLOGIZE TO THESE FASCIST FUNDIES! Don't turn the damned clock back to those not-so Happy Days when women were forced to labor in the kitchen (what you choose to do) without the benefit of a business plan or a tax accountant. Trust, me, Paula. Every single one of these prune-faced, uptight women would knife you in the back in a heartbeat if they thought they could take your place tomorrow.

You are a national treasure, Paula. You've inspired an entire generation of young cooks (including my daughter) to use their pizza money for fresh ingredients and spend some quality time in the kitchen. Don't give those nuts an inch, Paula.

I mean it, damn it!

Respectfully,

Snarky Sermon on the Blog: Reboot Me, Jesus!

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better equipped to communicate to the masses. They had been going at it for days, and God was tired of hearing all of the bickering. Finally God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a computer test that will run two hours and I will judge who does the better job."

So down Satan and Jesus sat at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They sent faxes. They sent e-mails. They prepared e-mails with attachments. They downloaded. They did some genealogy reports. They made cards. They did every known job.

But ten minutes before their time was up, lightening suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured down and, of course, the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed. The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming, "It's gone! It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!"

Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours.

Satan observed this and became irate. "Wait! He cheated! How did he do it?"

God shrugged and said, "Jesus saves."

Delilah's Brief Review Of
The Da Vinci Code

I liked it. But then, I'm a big fan of histo-archetypal psycho-linguistic symbols and people speaking Latin on cell phones. (The English subtitles were a bit distracting, of course.)

I also enjoyed Ron Howard's homage to early 20th century film directors' depictions of historical recreation (like the flashbacks in Karl Freund's 1932 film, The Mummy).

My hope for those who see this film: If even one person leaves the theater wondering about the Councils of Nicea, I will deem this film adaptation a success.

Just my snarky opinion after eating way too much popcorn.

Bush's Cocaine Crotch & The Lunging Drug Sniffing Dog

Yesterday, I laughed when Gordon the Drug Sniffing Dog lunged for President Bush's crotch during his Yuma border photo op (Scroll down for the photo).

Today, I'm not laughing.

I have it on the best authority (the director of field operations for a prominent national youth organization foundation) that male cocaine users who don't wash their hands before urinating draw drug dogs like flowers attract bees, and that Gordon the Drug Dog wouldn't lunge unless the situation called for immediate action.

So now we know. And the drug dog handlers know. And Gordon was just doing his job.

That'll do, Gordon. That'll do.

Pat Robertson Is God's Weatherman, Judy Miller Knew About 9/11, & Ann Coulter Wants A New President

Crock News Of The Day:

God has told Pat Robertson that storms will be really, really bad this year.

And disgraced "reporter" Judith Miller now claims that she knew about the Al Qaida attack 2 months before it happened:
In 2001, an anonymous White House source leaked top-secret NSA intelligence to reporter Judith Miller that Al Qaida was planning a major attack on the United States. But the story never made it into the paper.
Ann Coulter, defender of the slimiest creepy-crawly radical Republican slugs, thinks impeaching Bush is a good idea:
On the bright side, if President Bush's amnesty proposal for illegal immigrants ends up hurting Republicans and we lose Congress this November, maybe the Democrats will impeach him and we'll get Cheney as president.
Of course, Coulter has to spit on people to make her point:
At least Bush has dropped his infernal references to slacker Americans when talking about illegal immigrants. In his speech Monday night, instead of 47 mentions of "jobs Americans won't do," Bush referred only once to "jobs Americans are not doing"; which I take it means other than border enforcement and intelligence-gathering at the CIA. For the record, I'll volunteer right now to clean other people's apartments if I don't have to pay taxes on what I earn.

What a day! Auspicious start, to say the least.

I love the smell of radical rightwing desperation in the morning, don't you? However...

Don't be seduced by these Ooooh, Look Over There! non-event "news" stories. There are many more important issues to deal with. Sidetracking the American public is SOP for BushCo.

Gee, That John Adams Op Ed On Bogus Bush Poll Numbers Looks Familiar!

Shame on the editors and the publisher of The Salt lake Tribune (and several others) for allowing this total piece of tripe to appear in print. Even on their Opinion Pages:

Reliance on faulty polls pushes Bush popularity ratings downward
By John Adams

WASHINGTON - President Bush shouldn't worry. His poll numbers are nowhere near as low as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and other mainstream media would have you believe.
How come? First, the polls are not what they claim to be. They are not really polls of the American people or American voters. If you look at the fine print at the end of these stories, you will see that they were based on telephone interviews with around 1,000 people.
So when they say that "more than half of all Americans" feel the president is not doing a good job, they are really talking about just over 500 people - roughly, the number of Democrats in the sample.
Since Democrats are never likely to agree that Bush or any other Republican is doing a good job, we should focus on the other 500. If 30-plus percent of the total of 1,000 feel that the president is doing a good job that means that more than 60 percent of the 500 non-Democrats feel he is doing a good job.

Stupidity and/or pig ignorance should not excuse this downright attempt to deceive readers.

As for John Adams...

His opinion piece above was also carried by:

Colorado Daily.com ("Don't trust the polls on Bush")

Wilmington Star.com ("Bush needn't worry about polls")

KRTcampus.com ("Reliance on faulty polls pushes Bush popularity ratings downward")
Ahem. "KRT Campus is a national wire service for college newspapers."

I'm sure there are more copies of this ridiculous opinion piece out there. Let me know if you see it.

Oh, and will someone recommend some math classes to the perfectly pig ignorant John Adams? How about this one, a 7th Grade math lesson on percent and sampling?

It's a start, Mr. Adams.

Bush's Immigration Accomplishments To Date

Before you scroll down to read the new & improved 5 point BushCo plan, which looks like a scam to push National ID cards (or even biometric lowjacking) upon us all, here's the Bush Immigration Record:

* The President boasted of increasing manpower at the border, yet he failed to heed Congress’ own mandate to hire 2,000 additional border patrol agents, authorizing just 200 in his budget.[i] Under his administration, illegal border crossings have soared to an all-time high. While increasing the number of agents is important, it alone won’t solve the problem. In the last decade, the U.S. has tripled the number of Border Patrol agents, and they have spent eight times as many hours patrolling the border. During that same time, the undocumented population has doubled in size, the death rate has tripled and the per-apprehension cost has increased by nearly 500%.[ii] We need comprehensive reform, not enforcement-only.

* The President based his claim to return every illegal entrant caught crossing the border on an ineffective program has done little to deter illegal immigration. The interior repatriation program, whereby migrants are flown to locations within Mexico rather than released near border towns, did not reduce re-entry rates significantly and was so expensive that government officials acknowledged the need to cut costs by at least 60% before continuing it.[iii]

* The President promised to end the practice of “catch and release” by increasing the number of beds in detention facilities by 10 percent. Unfortunately, this increase will not even begin to address the lack of detention space. The U.S. currently has the capacity to hold 19,400 immigrants, less than 2% of the total who attempt to cross the border annually.[iv] A recent Center for American Progress study noted that increasing the space to detain more illegal immigrants would cost at least $14,000 per bed, meaning that the federal government would have to spend more than $2 billion up front just to accommodate the immigrants crossing illegally each year.[v]

* The President credited the “Texas Hold ‘Em” program for reducing Brazilian illegal immigration by 90% in the Rio Grande Valley, but failed to note that Brazilian immigrants make up less than 3 percent of the overall foreign-born population in the United States.[vi] Stemming the tide of immigration from Brazil says next to nothing about the real test for “Texas Hold ‘Em”—how well it slowed border crossers from Mexico.

* The President has vowed to work with Congress to reform immigration laws, yet his administration has been conspicuously absent from the debate for nearly four years. Aside from providing the bare outlines of a guestworker program in January 2004,[vii] the White House has done little to advance immigration reform on Capitol Hill.[viii] In July 2005, the administration was in such disarray it pulled two cabinet secretaries from testifying before the Senate at the last minute.[ix] Despite the emergence of several immigration proposals in the House and Senate, the White House has failed to provide critical leadership sorely needed.

* The President has promised to construct “physical barriers to entry” to keep illegal immigrants out, yet this rhetoric is just fodder for the right-wing proponents of an impractical plan. While the recently-constructed 14-mile fence near San Diego has contributed to a drop in illegal immigration there, illegal immigration in the perilous deserts of nearby Arizona has tripled at the same time,[x] suggesting that such fences merely shift immigration to more dangerous areas rather than slow it down.

* The President claims that the federal government is improving worksite enforcement, but this is simply not true. In 2003, just 443 illegal immigrants were arrested at their worksites,[xi] out of a working population of more than 6 million. Apprehending all illegal workers would cost well over $100 billion.[xii]

* The President’s temporary worker program is unrealistic in practice. The President wants to return all undocumented immigrants to their home country before they can qualify for a path to legal residence. Believing that current undocumented immigrants will “report to deport” is illogical, and it will incur the unnecessary cost of returning millions of immigrants to their home countries.[xiii]

Aw, did Bush lie to his base... again?

Tsk. Tsk.

White House Leaks Excerpts Of Bush's Prime Time Immigration Speech

The White House press office has just released excerpts of Bush's speech tonight.
On the President's vision for comprehensive immigration reform:

We are a Nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws. We are also a Nation of immigrants, and we must uphold that tradition, which has strengthened our country in so many ways. These are not contradictory goals. America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time. We will fix the problems created by illegal immigration, and we will deliver a system that is secure, orderly, and fair.

On Border Security:

Since I became President, we have increased funding for border security by 66 percent, and expanded the Border Patrol from about 9,000 to 12,000 agents. . . .we have apprehended and sent home about six million people entering America illegally.

Despite this progress, we do not yet have full control of the border, and I am determined to change that. Tonight I am calling on Congress to provide funding for dramatic improvements in manpower and technology at the border.

On the Importance of a Temporary Worker Program to relieve pressure on the border:

“The reality is that there are many people on the other side of our border who will do anything to come to America to work and build a better life. They walk across miles of desert in the summer heat, or hide in the back of 18-wheelers to reach our country. This creates enormous pressure on our border that walls and patrols alone will not stop. To secure the border effectively we must reduce the numbers of people trying to sneak across.

On enforcing our laws:

. . . we need to hold employers to account for the workers they hire. It is against the law to hire someone who is in this country illegally. Yet businesses often cannot verify the legal status of their employees, because of the widespread problem of document fraud. Therefore, comprehensive immigration reform must include a better system for verifying documents and work eligibility . . .

A tamper-proof card would help us enforce the law and leave employers with no excuse for violating it. And by making it harder for illegal immigrants to find work in our country, we would discourage people from crossing the border illegally in the first place.

On the President‚’s opposition to amnesty:

“. . . we must face the reality that millions of illegal immigrants are already here. They should not be given an automatic path to citizenship. This is amnesty, and I oppose it. Amnesty would be unfair to those who are here lawfully and it would invite further waves of illegal immigration.

On assimilation:

“. . . we must honor the great American tradition of the melting pot, which has made us one Nation out of many peoples. The success of our country depends upon helping newcomers assimilate into our society, and embrace our common identity as Americans. Americans are bound together by our shared ideals, an appreciation of our history, respect for the flag we fly, and an ability to speak and write the English language.

On the tone of the debate:

We must always remember that real lives will be affected by our debates and decisions, and that every human being has dignity and value no matter what their citizenship papers say.”

What a crock!

Meaningless drivel.

Tamper-proof ID Card? Does that mean that everyone will have to have one? Or just Mexicans?

Jeez. These people wouldn't give Gideon an attorney.

Hm. I wonder if Libertarians are happy tonight.

1,951 Miles Divided By 5,000 National Guard... er, Border Guards: Do The Math

Is anyone stupid enough to believe that Bush's 5,000 National Guard members, diverted from their local community commitments in interior US states, are being sent to the Mexican border for any reasons other than appeasing his most rabidly-racist base and providing content for frequent Rovian photo ops?

News crews, diverted from more pressing local, state, and national events, will also be dispatched to provide Riefenstahlian film coverage, right? I mean, what good is a group of uniformed and heavily-armed military guys & gals capturing a couple of work-hungry people without film at 11?

How many desperate, starving Goldsteins captured trying to cross the border do we really need to see on TV? One op per week? Two?

NG border ops will be the new terror alerts, y'all.

But stop for a moment and consider the math: 1,951 divided by 5,000.

The US-Mexican border is ponderously long.

Ahem.
The international border between Mexico and the United States runs from San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Baja California, in the west to Matamoros, Tamaulipas, and Brownsville, Texas, in the east. It traverses a variety of terrains, ranging from major urban areas to inhospitable deserts. From the border crossing at El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, to the east, it follows the course of the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte) to the Gulf of Mexico; from the same binational conurbation westward to the Pacific Ocean, it crosses vast tracts of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts, the Colorado River Delta, and the northernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula.

The border's total length is 1,951 miles (3,141 km), according to figures given by the IBWC.

If you believe this Bush Hail Mary quick fix crap is a worthwhile use for our all-volunteer National Guard, I hope you get lucky when the next big storm hits, the next toxic spill happens, or when the next jumbo jet crashes in your backyard.

If Bush is suddenly so concerned with guarding the border, why wasn't he concerned on 9/11 or at least on 9/12?

Oh, yeah. He was busy running scared in the opposite direction, wasn't he?

Delilah didn't do the deed, y'all.

The Pope & The Da Vinci Code

Making the rounds this week...

Pope Benedict (pictured above on the left, wearing a fabulous vintage chiffon-lined Dior gold lamé gown over a silk Vera Wang empire waist tulle cocktail dress, accessorized with a 3-foot beaded & peaked House of Whoville hat and the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in "The Wizard of Oz") is worried that The Da Vinci Code might make the Roman Catholic Church look foolish.

Sermonless Mother's Day On The Blog

It's Mother's Day, and it looks like KKKarl Rove is about to be frogmarched out of the White House... hopefully tomorrow, and Dick Cheney's margin notes on his copy of Ambassador Joseph Wilson's op ed are now known as "Exhibit A."

What we know:

1. Patrick Fitzgerald spent Friday meeting with Rove's lawyer.

2. Rove's lawyer remains strangely silent while all of this plays out... as does Libby's.

3. The fascist fundie American Enterprise Institute has canceled Rove's sold-out luncheon address, which was scheduled for tomorrow (May 15th). Hmmm.

4. Dick Cheney's handwritten notes in the margins of Wilson's op ed (from 2003) had to be in the hands of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby (and his lawyers) for quite some time. Looks like Scooter has had an ace up his sleeve, after all.

5. George W. will address the nation (in prime time) on immigration tomorrow night. Expect an outlandish diversionary crapfest with that oh, so familiar deer-in-the-headlights expression.

6. Oh yeah, they tried to kill another Kennedy. These guys never stop, do they?

Mother's Day. Presents, no housekeeping, great food, a failed Kennedy assassination attempt, and BushCo imploding.

Does it get any better than this?

Pssst! Call your mother or maternal role model.

I mean it, damn it.

Stuck In M. Night's America

Living 11 blocks from the nation's Capitol building, I sometimes forget how frustrating internet access can be for many people. Today, I'm in Lancaster, PA, where not only the signal keeps blitzing but the power does, too.

Were I a fascist fundie, I'd think God might be mad about all of the ticky tacky "Come See The Quaint Amish People" advertising hype in these parts. It's really quite remarkable.

Yes, I stopped at the Farmers Market in Bird In Hand, and I snapped a pic of the Intercourse Fire Dept. for my daughter's collection of weird American culture crap.

Mostly, I wonder how many more films M. Night Shyamalan can produce around here.

Anyway, sorry for the late post. Power controls us all.

Rice Says Iran's Letter Not an Overture

By ANNE GEARAN AP Diplomatic Writer
© 2006 The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday that Americans want to see progress in Iraq, but that President Bush will not be swayed by domestic politics when deciding how long U.S. forces should stay.

"I think the president will do what he thinks is best," regardless of public opinion or the fall elections, Rice said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Bush is at his lowest point in the polls, with only one-third of Americans saying they approve of the way he is handling the job, and the three-year-old Iraq war is a major reason for his decline.

Republicans are expected to suffer in congressional elections in November in part because of an erosion of support for the notion that the president's political party is best equipped to handle the fight against terrorism and other foreign policy matters.

"This is an extraordinary time," Rice said. "It means taking difficult decisions and doing what's right because you're not doing it for the midterm elections."

"You're doing it for the standing of the United States and the ability of the United States to influence well into the future and the future of the Middle East," Rice said.

The Bush administration sees a stable democracy in Iraq as the linchpin to spread political freedom elsewhere in the region. Continued insurgent and sectarian violence more than three years after the U.S.-led invasion have dimmed some of Iraq's political gains, but Rice said newly selected leaders understand the consequence of failure.

"They literally will hang separately or hang together. Literally," Rice said. "There is no stronger incentive to get it right."

Violence killed at least 34 people including a U.S. soldier in Iraq on Monday, as efforts to finish choosing the new Cabinet bogged down in a web of conflicting interests.

Bush has been straightforward with the public that "we're going to have to be in this war for awhile," Rice said of the struggle against terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

"I think Americans just want to know that progress is being made, and I know that it's hard sometimes when Americans see what's on their television screens," Rice said.

The top U.S. diplomat offered no updated timetable for U.S. force withdrawals below the current level of about 130,000, although other U.S. officials have said they expect some reduction this year.

The American soldier was killed when a roadside bomb struck a military convoy Monday southeast of Baghdad. The death raises to at least 2,421 the number of U.S. military members who have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

At least 33 American troops have been killed since April 22, when the new Iraqi government began to take shape with the selection of top leaders and the appointment of Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister-designate.

Al-Maliki, a Shiite, had hoped to complete the selection of his Cabinet on Tuesday or Wednesday. That would mark the final step in the establishment of the new government of national unity, which U.S. officials hope can calm sectarian tensions, lure Sunni Arabs from the insurgency and enable American troops to go home.

However, key Shiite and Sunni lawmakers told The Associated Press Monday that it was unlikely al-Maliki would finish the task this week because of the need to balance the interests of the religiously and ethnically based parties.

Rice said she is not concerned that the new leadership in Iraq is losing momentum.

"There is a strong feeling in this government that they have to deliver this time," Rice said.

Elsewhere in the Middle East, she said she sees no sign that the new Hamas leadership in the Palestinian territories is bowing to international pressure to renounce violence or accept Israel. She said the United States will soon propose new medical relief for the impoverished Palestinian people.

On Afghanistan, Rice said drug production remains a major problem. But she said she was optimistic about progress there more than four years after a U.S.-led invasion toppled the Islamic Taliban government.

"I think the trends in Afghanistan are very, very positive," Rice said. "This is a tough job and there will be some ups and downs."

Afghanistan supplies nearly 90 percent of the world's opium and heroin, and some of the profits from the illicit business are believed to go to the Taliban.

The government, backed by hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. and British money, has launched a campaign to eradicate poppies in many areas _ a move that is believed to have prompted armed resistance from traffickers.
Hm.

Strange stuff going on, indeed.

Is The New York Times Trying To Blog?

This article certainly looks like a blog post: catchy headline; Photoshopped photos with balloon callout Condi Rice quotes; and a distinctive BushCo smackdown "look"...

So why does this NYT article miss the blogging mark? Bloggers take a stand, damn it.

Pick a side, NYT. By continuing to follow the Republican recipe for Bear & Squirrel Stew (1 Bear= massive amounts of Republican shenanigans; 1 Squirrel= one Democrat saying or doing something remotely similar- on a much smaller scale-- at some point in the distant past; and a pot of boiling water), your attempt at luring blog fans as readers falls flat.

AAAAACKKK. Thanks for trying, NYT. Please play again.

Jeb! Must Have Majored In Moron-ology

And Jeb! isn't the only moronolgy major in Florida. The State House (90-24) and senate (39-1) voted to require Florida's children to declare majors before graduating from high school.

I'm sure the proposal, based on a study by "a task force of educators," sounded like a good idea to lawmakers whose children have been and forever will be nurtured by teachers, counselors and college-of-their-choice admissions committees. The rest of Florida's children, however, will soon learn a new (actually, rather old) vocabulary word: Tracking.

Back in my day, with a 3-tiered tracking system firmly in place, I had no idea that there were kids who weren't college bound. I had no idea what a discipline problem was. And I had no idea that there were kids who didn't do their homework. My real education (on education) began the first year of my teaching career.

The most ridiculous part of this "Declare A major-- Or Else" legislation? You don't really get to choose your major in college. Sure, most of us thinks we do, but that's not how it works. When you declare a major, your chosen department judges your qualifications, potential, and recommendations. Then, you get either a thumbs up or down.

Imagine declaring a major while in high school and being turned away at the college level. How would that feel? Personally, I don't know, but I've taught many kids who showed absolutely no aptitude for their passions.

And what about the kids who've never even been exposed to classical dance, music theory, investigative journalism, or applied mathematics until well after they've declared a major in wood shop?

Developmental readiness can't be standardized. Frankly, I don't want to return to the days of square pegs. Do you?

Porter Goss (Hookergate) Resigns

Ya gotta love the FAND... The Friday Afternoon News Dump.

Goss' resignation is a complete surprise. No Bush replacement is waiting in the wings, and the CIA's #3 guy (Dusty Foggo) is being investigated in the Republican Hookergate scandal.

Hm. Bush now claims that Goss was merely a transitional CIA Director. (It's much easier to cut the rope to Goss' lifeboat that way.)

legally-but Bush and Libreals plan to give vacine to the illegals letting U.S.
citizens die.
It is time to impeach;enforce existing immigration law(fine and jail employers);
give all illegals 120 days to leave;bring troops home from Iraq-enforce our
borders.Issue national idenity cards.

I mean, come on, y'all. Bush and the "libreals" working together?
