This Week's
Backside Of The Bell Curve
Winner!
US Secretary of State
Condoleezza
"Where Appropriate"
Rice
From the Startle Gram (Ft. Worth Star Telegram):
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, while on a four-day trip to Europe this week, is the latest administration spokesperson trying to explain how terrorism suspects -- including those who have been sent to other nations -- are being treated.
Rice, refusing to confirm or deny CIA-run prisons in other countries, admitted that some suspects have been transported to other nations but adamantly denied that this was so that detainees could be tortured.
"The United States does not use the airspace or airports of any country for the purpose of transporting a detainee to a country where he or she will be tortured," Rice said before departing for Europe. "The United States has not transported anyone, and will not transport anyone, to a country when we believe he will be tortured. Where appropriate, the United States seeks assurances that transferred persons will not be tortured."
Where appropriate?
The Startle Gram's op ed ending is great!
Assume that there is no torture of terrorism suspects being sent to other nations. And assume that every method being used to interrogate them is "lawful" -- under our laws as well as international treaties.
That leaves an unanswered question: Why send these suspects to other countries in the first place?
Good question!
File this under: Still waiting for an appropriate answer, Ms. Rice.
