July 1, 2004 -- SPORTS fans don't care for any politicians, but the crowd at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night was explosively negative when the face of Vice President Dick Cheney (above) was shown on the scoreboard during the 7th-inning stretch. The boos were so immediate and so loud that Cheney's image was quickly taken off the screen. The incident had political junkies buzzing. "This is the blue-collar Bronx we're talking about," said one— not that the Republicans are likely to carry the borough anyway. Cheney is simply the most unpopular vice president of the modern age. While most veeps have been the butt of Leno-Letterman jokes about their bumbling uselessness, Cheney is being portrayed by some Bush-bashers as the evil genius who pulls Bush's strings— no laughing matter.
