Today's Sermon

It Just Goes To Show You...

Focus Groups will tell you what they think you want to hear:
The Case Of Umbert The Unborn, catholic.net's embryonic tool.

A New Addition to Catholic.net Named Umbert

by Father Owen Kearns

Catholic.net is about to break new ground in the world of Catholic internet publishing: cartoonist Gary Cangemi will now be creating a daily Umbert the Unborn exclusively on Catholic.net. Umbert has been one of the National Catholic Register´s most popular features and we hope on the Web he will entertain and inspire as many people as possible. The political left and right have cartoonists who make their points. The pro-life movement has Umbert!

At the Register we receive many letters about Umbert. Typical of them is this one:

"Our family loves the Register. Our teen-agers (ages 13, 14 and 16) frequently read various articles - after they´ve checked out Umbert and Baby Mugs."

And I particularly like this one, from John Materazzo of Roxbury, Massachusetts:

"The Register is a well-done effort. I especially wish to cite Gary Cangemi´s ´Umbert the Unborn´ as an outstanding piece of work. It´s far more than cute, cuddly and lovable. Its cutting-edge theme is creative, timely and cerebral and its humor is worthy of the top echelon of cartoonists today. His strip is terrific and should be syndicated throughout the Catholic periodical world. Thank you for your decision to carry it and to Gary for his unique talent."

Notice how incredibly white, Anglo-Saxon, and male Umbert is.

Even if a woman's life is at stake, who could ever abort such a cutie?

Isn't it worth dying to make sure this cute little embryo gets to grow up to share his sacred white, Anglo-Saxon sperm and create more and more Umberts to support The Church?

The moral: When asked your opinion of a tasteless, insulting comic strip, tell the truth. And stop being stupid enough to fall for such obvious patriarchal propaganda.
