Nixonian Blast From The Past:
August 8, 1974

At 10:00 pm, August 8, 1974, Nixon gave a televised address announcing that he would resign the presidency "effective at noon tomorrow." [August 9, 1974.] The noon time of Nixon's resignation corresponds with Gerald R. Ford's swearing of the oath of office. With the exception of LBJ's swearing of the oath immediately following JFK's assassination in Dallas, Texas, the U.S. Constitution specifies that a U.S. president is inaugurated on January 20th at 12 noon or assumes office (as in the case of Nixon's resignation) at 12 o'clock noon. Hence, the official time of Nixon's resignation is August 9, 1974 at 12:00 o'clock noon, not the time he publicly announced his intention to resign.
