And You Thought You Had Problems!

I've been known to don my virtual tin foil hat from time to time, but damn!

The woman who needs a veil of protection from modern life

Veiled: Sarah Dacre keeps the 21st century at bay

No, she's NOT a beekeeper. This woman believes that her bizarre headgear can save her from the dangerous electrosmog all around us. Can she possibly be right?

Before knocking on Sarah Dacre's door, I take the precaution of checking my mobile phone. It's switched off, as she has requested.

"Last time someone came to visit," she warns, "I started feeling awfully nauseous. It turned out he had a picture phone with him and had left it switched on. A picture phone!"

A stream of doctors, complementary practitioners and Chinese herbalists all failed to alleviate any of her symptoms or come up with a diagnosis.

Instead, she found an answer on Google - through websites such as

All her symptoms seemed to match those of people who believe they are allergic to modern life.

Double Hm.
In one "provocation" study, a number of people who claimed to have electrical sensitivity were placed in a room with a mobile phone and not told whether or not it was switched on.

Asked by a researcher how they felt, they failed to establish any link between physical symptoms and the alleged trigger.

I have to wonder how much Sarah paid for the "veil of protection," the tin foil wallpaper and the shimmery piece of netting she sleeps in.

As for most of her symptoms... Sounds like Menopause to me.

But that "veil of protection" deal sure looks like fun, doesn't it?

What a drag it is getting old, Sarah.

Snarky Sermon on the Blog: Where'd The Money Go?

I don't remember reading "Thou shalt take the money and run" anywhere in the Bible, do you?

Well, godfather of the Dominionists (and former Arthur Murray dance instructor), James D. Kennedy is firing staff and closing the office doors. Here's "Dr." Kennedy with his good friend, Tom DeLay:

Conservative Center Closes Up Shop

FORT LAUDERDALE - The Center for Reclaiming America for Christ, founded more than a decade ago to propagate a largely antiabortion, antigay message, has closed its doors.

The offshoot of Coral Ridge Ministries laid off an undisclosed number of workers Thursday at its headquarters here and at an office in Washington in what was called a "streamlining."

"We're getting back to our core competency, the production of media," said Brian Fisher, executive vice president at Coral Ridge, which was founded by the Rev. D. James Kennedy. "Our heart and soul is the teaching of Dr. Kennedy, and getting it to more people than those who come to church."

Kennedy has been absent from the public view since suffering a heart attack in December.

Hm. Maybe paying Ann Coulter to speak at your events wasn't really good for business, "Dr." Kennedy?

Thus Endeth Today's Sermon.

Go forth today and read about James D. Kennedy's mission to "reclaim America for Christ," as well as his dirty deals with the reverend Sun Myung Moon and FOX's Bill O'Reilly, and his radical tightie rightie religious manipulation of lawmakers in Washington DC...

Then ask yourself: Where'd the money go?

"I mean it, damn it!"

Denver Plagued By... Well, Plague

Cute little squirrels are dying in Denver.

Plague was found in a dead tree squirrel near City Park after citizens noticed a die-off of squirrels in the neighborhood, state officials confirmed Thursday. Denver Animal Control investigated the squirrel deaths and tested the body of a dead squirrel. Officials said the tests were positive for plague. John Pape, an epidemiologist who specializes in animal-related diseases, said while plague is seen every year among rodent populations in rural areas of Colorado, including the Front Range, it's unusual to find plague in the center of an urban area. But, he said, it has happened before. "Plague is a bacteria that is maintained in various species of rodents and rabbits and transmitted by fleas. When an infected rodent becomes sick and dies, its fleas can carry the infection to other warm-blooded animals, including humans," Pape said. "People also can be exposed through direct contact with infected rodents, rabbits and cats." Pape assured that the risk of Denver residents contracting plague is extremely low. Several groups, including the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Denver Environmental Health, are working to figure out the extent of the die-off in the area. Pape explained that when the animals die, the fleas leave the carcass to find another host, thus spreading the disease. He warned residents to not handle any dead rodents and to keep all pets away from them. People should use gloves and a plastic bag if they do dispose of the carcasses. Plague is treated with common antibiotics when recognized early. Symptoms include sudden fever, muscle pain, nausea and vomiting.
Add this to your list of things NOT to do in Denver: Don't feed the squirrels. In fact, don't go near the squirrels. Hm. Maybe you'd better not play with pets that might have fleas, either.

There's something seriously wrong with the man. Period.

Won't somebody please do something about this guy?

Never mind. Someone did. Look closely at that last photo. Now, look at this one...

Office Of The Special Council Will (cough) Investigate (cough) Karl Rove

Before you get all excited about the possibility of Rove finally being exposed and indicted, remember why blogs are so important today: When bloggers read a national news story --like this one from The Los Angeles Times-- they immediately formulate questions, like:

Who's in charge of this so-called investigation?

Who stands to benefit from such an investigation?

Why now?

OK, here we go...

Meet Scott J. Bloch:

"We will take the evidence where it leads us," Scott J. Bloch, head of the Office of Special Counsel and a presidential appointee, said in an interview Monday. "We will not leave any stone unturned."...

Scott J. Bloch is a Bush-appointed toadie of the first magnitude:

The Office of Personnel Management's inspector general has been investigating allegations by current and former OSC employees that Special Counsel Scott J. Bloch retaliated against underlings who disagreed with his policies -- by, among other means, transferring them out of state -- and tossed out legitimate whistle-blower cases to reduce the office backlog. Bloch denies the accusations, saying that under his leadership the agency has grown more efficient and receptive to whistle-blowers.

Who stands to gain the most from this so-called investigation?

Karl Rove, of course.

This "investigation" will take a really, really long time, you know. And no one will be able to talk about it because it will be "an on-going investigation." (Stop me if you've heard that one before.) Plus, Bloch will be able to keep evidence out of the hands of congress, thus stopping further hearings and evidence-gathering initiatives.

Why now? What better time to quash inquiries into the nefarious dealings of KKKarl Rove? The result: Run out the clock, and Rove skates.

Any more questions?

FDA To Change Chocolate Formula (Cheaper, Inferior Ingredients)!

Damn! Is nothing sacred with these Bushbots?

The U.S. Chocolate Industry's plan is to change the basic formula of chocolate in order to use vegetable fat substitutes in place of cocoa butter, and to use milk substitutes in the place of nutritionally superior milk.

The U.S. Chocolate Industry, through its Chocolate Manufacturers of America (CMA), and in collaboration with the Grocery Manufacturers Association, have petitioned the Food and Drug Association (FDA) to change the current requirements for chocolate.

Hm. Who benefits from this change in the chocolate formula?

Not the consumer.

Certainly not the chocolatier.

Not America.

Actually, the rest of the world will benefit...

'Cause no chocolate lover will ever buy American chocolate again.

Thanks, Bushbots. You've destroyed yet another American industry for a few more pennies of profit.

In Memoriam: Limbo & Logic

Hm. No more Limbo...

Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries

(Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went.

In a long-awaited document, the Church's International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an "unduly restrictive view of salvation."

Now that Limbo is no more, what are the consequences of Original Sin?

Limbo is contingent on the doctrine of Original Sin, which some dismiss as of little consequence. However, to believe in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is to believe in Original Sin. Of all God’s human creatures, the Blessed Virgin Mary alone was never touched by Original Sin or any sin. She is the Immaculate Conception—in the singular. Every other person comes into this world with the guilt of the sin of our first parents—or more correctly the sin of Adam.

Hm. Baptism no longer necessary to remove original sin? Not so fast, says Pope Benedict.

The Church teaches that baptism removes original sin which stains all souls since the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden.

The document stressed that its conclusions should not be interpreted as questioning original sin or "used to negate the necessity of baptism or delay the conferral of the sacrament."

OK, let's recap:

Limbo is now closed.

But Original Sin is still open for business.

Anyone else see an inherent flaw in that argument?

Of course, logic has always been the true enemy of faith, hasn't it?

Thus Endeth Today's Sermon.

Go forth today and Google "Original Sin" and "Limbo."

And contemplate how the two are part of the whole light/dark (yin & yang, if you will) of churchiology.

"I mean it, damn it!"

A Lesson In Good Government: Barney Frank Explains "Motion To Recommit"

A motion to recommit returns a bill to committee, in effect killing it. However, a motion to recommit with instructions is a last opportunity to amend the bill.

The instructions to the committee direct changes to the text of the bill. If adopted, the chairman of the named committee immediately stands and reports the change back to the House. The next step is the House vote on final passage of the bill.

Minority Members receive priority of recognition for offering motions to recommit.

And now for today's lesson from US Rep. Barney Frank:

By the way, the Dems prevailed in that vote.

Suck it, Repub Good Government Haters!

Time To Dust Of Your Copy Of "The Cardinal"

Or, at least, watch the movie...

... If you want to understand the Supreme W. Court's radical ruling on late-term abortion.

From an IMDB reviewer:

With the current moral divide on the question of abortion, I am reminded of that crucial scene in the movie when the character portrayed by Tryon had to decide on what medical procedure to choose in the case of an emergency arising out of a childbirth gone awry. He was the nearest of kin (brother) of the woman involved and the doctors advised him that there was a choice as to whether to abort the baby (by crushing its head with forceps) or let the childbirth proceed in which case the mother's life would be compromised. In such cases, Catholic morality requires that the best effort should be made to save both infant and mother but in no case may an intervention be made to kill either one of them.

Guess which one the priest chose to save.

For those of you saying "This will never happen to me, and it rarely happens at all," I have one question:

Are you willing to risk your life --or the life of a loved one-- because you trust your priests, your politicians, and your BushCo Supremes?

Good luck with that.

Random Crazies & Their Cowardly Acts

Records are made to be broken, right? The Virginia Tech killer thought he'd go down in history as the biggest bad-ass of his day, right?

Guess again, coward!

BU student sends out email threatening to recreate Va. Tech tragedy

-- Police say a part-time Boston University student sent out an email threatening to recreate the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

This morning's Herald reports that 20-year-old Andrew Rosenblum threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and some of her classmates.

According to the police report, Rosenblum also said he would turn the gun on himself.

Police say he could be charged with threatening to do bodily harm as early as today.

No one can fully protect me from the random crazies out there. And no one seems to be able to convince these suicidal maniacs that someone will always come along to best their bloody "records," thus rendering their killing sprees just numbers in a future timeline.

This latest bloodbath at Virginia Tech could've been a watershed moment for 24/7 cable news coverage. Talking heads could've used their air time to educate the random crazies out there about how fleeting their infamy will be and how cowardly their acts will be viewed in perpetuity.

It takes no courage to mow down unarmed kids. And it's just plain stupid to think you'll be hailed as the most vicious killer in American history... when, in reality, that "fame" will last no longer than a blink of history's eye.

Of course, these killers won't know that they'll go down in history as random crazies...

Because they always take the chicken shit coward's way out: Suicide.

A History Of Violence

I turned off my TV yesterday when Wolf Blitzer asked one of the Virginia Tech survivors, "What's the mood on campus right now?"

Instead, I decided to wait for actual news of the tragedy. This morning, a few more facts have been reported, but it will take time for authorities to determine exactly what happened.

Hey, Wolf! How's the mood at CNN this morning? Is everyone giddy? How do you think the survivors of these school tragedies felt?

Primary and Elementary school killings

May 18, 1927 Bath, Michigan, USA School board member Andrew Kehoe, upset by a property tax for a new school building which caused the foreclosure of his farm, set up a series of explosions in the Bath elementary school. That morning he killed his wife and set his farm building on fire. While fire fighters were arriving at the farm, an explosion destroyed the north wing of the school. As people gathered outside the school, Kehoe drove up and detonated a bomb inside his shrapnel-filled vehicle. During the rescue efforts, searchers discovered an additional 500 pounds (230 kg) of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol planted throughout the basement of the school's south wing. The bombings constituted the deadliest act of mass murder in a school in U.S. history, claiming more than three times as many victims as the Columbine High School massacre.

Thirty-three people were killed including the gunman in two separate locations: the West Ambler Johnston Hall where two were shot dead and Norris Hall where the remaining 31, including the gunman, were shot. Over 20 others were injured in the violence that lasted over 2 hours.

You Are What You Watch (And Read)

How about a freshly brewed cup of empirical evidence this morning?

Pew Survey Finds Most Aware Americans Watch 'Daily Show' and 'Colbert'-- and Visit Newspaper Sites

NEW YORK A new survey of 1,502 adults released Sunday by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that despite the mass appeal of the Internet and cable news since a previous poll in 1989, Americans' knowledge of national affairs has slipped a little. For example, only 69% know that Dick Cheney is vice president, while 74% could identify Dan Quayle in that post in 1989.

Other details are equally eye-opening. Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Colbert Report. They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot -- with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind.

Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly.

What a way to kick start your morning! Tasty news for the informed.

Any questions?

The Backside Of The Bell Curve: How Stupid Is Katie Couric?

Bad week, Katie?

First, her producer plagiarizes a story from The Wall Street Journal, and Katie reads it on the air (as a first-person, autobiographical piece).

Now, she's tossing out a thoroughly debunked (by CNN) rightwing swiftboat-ish hit/ smear against Barack Obama:

Katie Couric's Notebook: Obama's Background
Posted by Katie Couric

Is America ready for a President who grew up praying in a mosque?

Barack Obama has arguably the most diverse religious background of any candidate, ever. But will that help him or hurt him?

The clue phone for you, Katie.

CNN debunks false report about Obama

POSTED: 2:01 a.m. EST, January 23, 2007

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Allegations that Sen. Barack Obama was educated in a radical Muslim school known as a "madrassa" are not accurate, according to CNN reporting.

Insight Magazine, which is owned by the same company as The Washington Times, reported on its Web site last week that associates of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, had unearthed information the Illinois Democrat and likely presidential candidate attended a Muslim religious school known for teaching the most fundamentalist form of Islam.

Obama lived in Indonesia as a child, from 1967 to 1971, with his mother and stepfather and has acknowledged attending a Muslim school, but an aide said it was not a madrassa.

Hey, Katie!

"Some White House e-mails on fired attorneys may be lost": If You Believe This...

I've got some great real estate investments you might be interested in.

(Reuters) - Some White House staff wrote e-mail messages about official business on Republican Party accounts, and some may have been wrongly deleted, the administration said on Wednesday in an embarrassing disclosure tied to the probe into the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

The White House said it could not rule out the possibility that some official e-mails relating to the firings had been deleted and are lost.

What a crock.

5,760,000 Google hits on "recovering lost emails" later...

The White House is lying.

Recovering "lost" emails is free and (mostly) easy.

Hey, did you know that you can also restore your computer files to a previous date?

Psst! Never believe a Republican when it comes to electronic data.

Scratch that! Never believe a Republican. Period.

"The Cleaning Lady" Responds To Imus

From The New York Times:

For all their grit, hard work and courage, the Rutgers girls got branded “nappy-headed ho’s” — a shockingly concise sexual and racial insult, tossed out in a volley of male camaraderie by a group of amused, middle-aged white men. The “joke” — as delivered and later recanted — by the radio and television personality Don Imus failed one big test: it was not funny.

The serial apologies of Mr. Imus, who was suspended yesterday by both NBC News and CBS Radio for his remarks, have failed another test. The sincerity seems forced and suspect because he’s done some version of this several times before.

I know, because he apparently did it to me.

Don Imus now claims that he never said of Gwen Ifill, “Isn’t The Times wonderful? It lets the cleaning lady cover the White House.”

Funny, the late Lars-Eric Nelson reported this Imess quote in 1998 in the New York Daily News.

And what did Gewn Ifill do to deserve such hateful spittle? She didn't return The I Mess' phone call.

Keep digging that hole, Imus. Your mouth is your own worst enemy.

By the way, forget the shovel. Use this...

Who's sorry now? Don Imus called some female atheletes "nappy-headed hos" last week, and now he's "sorry."

Sure, Imus is sorry. Sorry that he's jeopardized donations to his ranch for kids with cancer.

Why Repubs Want Gonzales To Resign: He's Bush's Intellectual Equal

Even disgraced Repub Newt Gingrich believes Gonzo should consider resigning.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Sunday urged Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign, saying the "self-created mess" over the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year has hampered his ability to do his job.

"I cannot imagine how he is going to be effective for the rest of this administration," Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday."
"They're going to be involved in endless hearings, which is going to take up an immense amount of time and effort.
"I think the country, in fact, would be much better served to have a new team at the Justice Department, across the board."

Why, oh why, Newt?

Easy answer: Gonzo can't seem to master his list of lies without contradicting himself.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has virtually wiped his public schedule clean to bone up for his long-awaited April 17 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee—a session widely seen as a crucial test as to whether he will survive the U.S. attorney mess. But even his own closest advisers are nervous about whether he is up to the task. At a recent "prep" for a prospective Sunday talk-show interview, Gonzales's performance was so poor that top aides scrapped any live appearances. During the March 23 session in the A.G.'s conference room, Gonzales was grilled by a team of top aides and advisers—including former Republican National Committee chair Ed Gillespie and former White House lawyer Tim Flanigan—about what he knew about the plan to fire seven U.S. attorneys last fall. But Gonzales kept contradicting himself and "getting his timeline confused," said one participant who asked not to be identified talking about a private meeting. His advisers finally got "exasperated" with him, the source added. "He's not ready," Tasia Scolinos, Gonzales's public-affairs chief, told the A.G.'s top aides after the session was over, said the source. Asked for comment, Scolinos told NEWSWEEK: "This was the first session of this kind that we'd done."

Hm. Sounds like Gonzo needs someone to save his ass (like he saved Bush's ass back in Texas).

But who can save Gonzo's ass?

Easter Sermon On The Blog: No Loaves & Fishes For Orlando's Poor, Jesus!

What's wrong with these people in Orlando, Florida?

Florida police arrest activist for feeding homeless

MIAMI (Reuters) - Police in Florida have arrested an activist for feeding the homeless in downtown Orlando.

Eric Montanez, 21, of the charity group Food Not Bombs, was charged with violating a controversial law against feeding large groups of destitute people in the city center, police said on Thursday.

Montanez was filmed by undercover officers on Wednesday as he served "30 unidentified persons food from a large pot utilizing a ladle,"
according to an arrest affidavit. The Orlando area is home to Disney World and Universal Studios Florida.

The Orlando law, which is supported by local business owners who say the homeless drive away customers but has been challenged in court by civil rights groups, allows charities to feed more than 25 people at a time within two miles of Orlando city hall only if they have a special permit. They can get two permits a year.

Police collected a vial of the stew Montanez was serving as evidence.

Police spokeswoman Barbara Jones said in an e-mail it was the first time anyone had been arrested under the feeding ban.

Montanez was charged with a misdemeanor.

Maundy Thursday Musings

George W. Bush wailed this week because congress is in recess (after working its first 5-day weeks since Bush's Repub party took control).

Then Bush left DC for his vacation in Texas.

George W. Bush attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for going to Syria... after sending a Repub congressional group there with his blessings. Oh, and... remember Denny Hastert's foreign trip?

And George W. Bush wants an Iraq supplementary bill sent to him sans pork. Funny, he never demanded that from his own party: "Bridge to nowhere" ring any bells?

Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos.

Somebody needs to teach George W. Bush about his own (professed) religion. "Me, me, me" isn't exactly the lesson taught by the carpenter on this holy day.
